The Stone Stool was created by Marcel Wanders for the Italian design label Kartell.
Launched by Giulio Castelli in 1949, Kartell developed a global name for itself with contemporary furnishings and accessories for the home, workspace and public areas. Many of its pieces involve the innovative use of plastic. Dutch designer Marcel Wanders founded his own studio, Wanders Wonders, in Rotterdam in 1992, going on to win the Rotterdam Design Prize for his iconic Knotted Chair. A feature of Wanders' work is the way he combines humour with design surprises.
The simple hourglass shape of the Stone Stool almost conceals its clever design. This low stool is cast in one piece to create an eye-catching irregular surface of refractive geometric facets. These catch the light and create prismatic reflections reminiscent of a sparkling diamond. The Stone Stool is typical of Wanders' use of wit in design and is perfect for providing extra occasional seating either in the home or public spaces. It also works just as effectively as a side table in living rooms and bedrooms. The stool is crafted from moulded polycarbonate and is 45cm high and 30cm in diameter.
